Second annual Enterprise Boot Camp

Ryan Chen-Wing

The second spring in a row UW Innovate Inc. brought about 30 of UW's aspiring entrepreneurs together with about 15 experienced business leaders to "give them the boots thay need to kick but in today's marketplace."

Running from 28 April to 1 May, the boot camp consists of workshops and panel discussions, a venture development simulation and networking opportunities. While mostly third year, fourth year and recent grads, participants ranged from first year to adults with years of experience.

Participants met at St. Jerome's conference centre in the afternoon of Monday 28 April and would spend most of the next three days together learning about, thinking about, and discussing busienss startup issues. At the beginning six were chosen to be CEOs for the venture development simulation. Over an hour the CEOs had to go around and hire four other members of a management team from the rest who had been assigned different roles. They then had to go through salary negotiations while staying under budget.

After the companies were formed they had to begin work on developing their organizations and a seed idea that would be presented at the end of the camp. The work on the companies and presentations would have to happen outside of the talks and workshops.

The workshops were given by people from a variety of areas that a startup business might have to work with, lawyers, accountants, marketing, financing, sales, knowledge management and other consultants.
